Dr.
Lester James Peries - Director
 |
| In
the brief history of television in Sri Lanka one artiste who
has lit up the small screen with the incandescent glow of
her many & varied performances is YASHODA WIMALADHARMA
. She made her debut to TV from her award wining performances
in the theatre and subsequently the cinema, but it is her
dominance in Television serials that has captured the
minds and hearts of the ordinary people, the mass audience
of this country. She appeals to a wide spectrum of an audience
more exacting than the average TV addict. This despite the
fact that the medium is now threatened by a surfeit
of the most banal and silly commercials that coned drive the
viewer to the nearest flea-pit cinema
It has been my loss that
I have never been able to direct her in a motion
picture, for at her very best she is like some
finely-tuned instrument that can respond to the most
subtle, the most fleeting of emotions |

In a Sinhala film industry
struggling to stay aline I consider my self fortunate
that I've had the good fortune to direct her in my film
"Duvata Mawaka Misa" (mother alone). Her natural nuancel
performance earned her the richly deserved best
supporting actress (Presidential 1996) for her role that
year. A sensitive intelligent and responsive artiste
like Yashoda is an inspiration to a director
She stands tall- very tall
amongst her colleagues |

I do not subscribe to
the view that it is only in Asia that one finds
actresses who are exceptionally gifted at the
portrayal of emotion. Such talent, I believe is
found everywhere. Indeed, I have encountered quite a
few of them and yet, I am bold enough to say that
if there can be a synthesis of what is best in all
these actresses, it is Yashoda Wimaladharma

Yashoda
is an immensely talented and sensitive actress whose full
potential has yet to be explored and exploited. May it happen
soon! |

She possesses a powerful
pair of eyes and a voice which any actress should have
in order to display her dramatic talent to the optimum.
I feel sad for those creative people who keep postponing
using the creativeness of such a talented artiste |

Only a few in our country
accept that acting is a scientific activity that should
be studied deeply. While working with Yashoda in a few
teledramas during the past twelve years, I realized that
she does her role after careful and serious study. The
secret of her success is the tremendous effort she puts
in and the commitment she shows from the time she lays
her hand on the script until she portrays the character
before the camera. It's not often that one comes across
an actress with a good figure in cinema or television.
There are only a handful in the fifty years of Sinhala
cinema. It's not a surprise that she is among them.

I see her as an extremely talented
actress who is able to convey feelings. She has the ideal
pair of eyes to convey feelings. She portrays her characters
intelligently. As an artiste, she has the ability to understand
any character. She has proved that she has that ability.
It was because of the hidden talent that she possesses,
that she was able to show her capabilities on stage, television
and cinema and also become a popular star. Let her gain
more strength and confidence to delight the audience through
cinema, stage and television. She is a 'daughter of courage'.
Above all, she has always been a loving sister to me in
times of both happiness and sorrow. |

Acting
is the action and reaction to the inner feelings, which
arise in one's mind. The most effective medium for
acting is the cinema. In the sphere of acting the
exceptionally talented Yashodha Wimaladharma is the
proud fortune of our country. The camera lens is able to
capture Yashoda's magnificent reactions and responses in
any desired manner. Her radiant eyes are like Sri
Lanka's glittering gems. Now is the time for the
brilliance of Yashoda's eyes which capture the human
feelings so well, to be spread worldwide. |

Yashoda Wimaladharma is an
exceptionally gifted actress, capable of playing the most
challenging role to perfection. She is, in fact, a natural.
She was able to, at a very tender age, make an indelible
mark in the Sinhala theatre, teledrama and cinema. She mastered
the fundamentals of acting tradition easily and went on
to develop an identity for herself as a leading light in
the contemporary cinematic scene
|
I see a sensitive
actress in Yashoda; an actress who clearly exudes
the quality of one who has strived to have her
sensibilities in everything she does. Her
portrayals contain a rhythm that is a unique
blend of the delicate in a woman and all the
bludgeoning she has to suffer on account of simply
being a woman. The wide range of emotions, that she
is able to depict with sensitivity and nuance
tastefully, truly speaks of a rare and
exceptional talent. |
Yashoda has touched the
hearts and sensibilities of her audience, mesmerizing
us with a freshness that takes nothing away from the
deeper, spiritual expression that is at the heart of her
art
|
Capable of bringing out the
most subtle nuances of meaning through precise articulation and
gifted with a striking set of eyes capable of
capturing the most indifferent in a net as it
were , Yashoda can be said to have been blessed by
the gods. Her portraits therefore mirror aesthetic
rhythms that can dissect the human condition and
her portrayals in Wasantha Obeyasekara's " Theertha Yathra"
and Jayantha Chandrasiris' "Agnidahaya" would
suffice to
prove this assertion |
